Nationwide Program from First Lady Michelle Obama, WGBH-TV, the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Emphasizes Importance of Nutritious Eating for Kids
Westport, CT (April 1, 2015) — Newman’s Own today announced that it is providing support to WGBH Boston for the fourth annual Healthy Lunchtime Challenge & Kids’ “State Dinner,” a joint effort by First Lady Michelle Obama, PBS flagship station WGBH Boston, the Department of Education and the Department of Agriculture to raise national awareness about the importance of healthy cooking and eating from an early age.
“Newman’s Own and Newman’s Own Foundation have been long-time supporters of nutrition and wellness programs, and we’re excited about working with First Lady Michelle Obama and WGBH Boston to raise awareness on a national level about good nutrition and healthy eating habits,” said Robert Forrester, President and CEO of Newman’s Own Foundation. “Since Newman’s Own was founded in 1982, we have donated more than $430 million from the profits and royalties earned through the sale of our food and beverage products. Nutrition education and fresh food access have been key priorities for us.”
The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge & Kids’ State Dinner program invites U.S. children between the ages of 8 and 12, in collaboration with a parent or guardian, to create and submit a nutritious and delicious lunch recipe at pbs.org/lunchtimechallenge. All entrants have the chance to win a trip to Washington, D.C. and the opportunity to be invited to attend a Kids’ State Dinner at the White House, hosted by the First Lady, where a selection of the winning healthy recipes will be served.
The winning recipes will be chosen by a panel of judges that includes: Let’s Move! Executive Director Debra Eschmeyer, representatives of the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, previous Healthy Lunchtime Challenge winners, and Tanya Steel, children’s healthy eating expert and founder of Cooking Up Big Dreams.
Recipe submissions will be accepted from March 31 through April 30 online at pbs.org/lunchtimechallenge or by mail at: Healthy Lunchtime Challenge c/o WGBH, One Guest Street, Boston, MA 02135. For more information and for contest rules, visit pbs.org/lunchtimechallenge.
The winning recipes will also be featured in a downloadable, printable free e-cookbook available on pbs.org/lunchtimechallenge.
