Thanks to support from Newman’s Own Foundation, neglected dogs and cats can find the love they need.
Our Companions is a rehabilitation, Sanctuary, and adoption center for dogs and cats with medical and/or behavioral challenges. Some of the most vulnerable animals who are older, traumatized or abused get another chance to find their forever homes. Our Companions provides longer-term stays and low-stress, home-like environments that encourage healing and rehabilitation.
After living in the pound for many months, Kaylee was in desperate need of training, exercise, and tons of love. She was not a fan of other dogs, and she required more patience, running, and walking than some other dogs. She had far too much energy to be placed with cats and kids. Despite her upbeat personality, social nature with people, and cheerful disposition, she wasn’t the easiest pup to place. Kaylee found refuge and love with the help of Our Companions and, after almost two happy years at the Sanctuary, Kaylee found her amazing parents and forever home.
Allie came to Our Companions after being seized by Animal Control as part of an animal neglect case. She was nine years old and was rarely taken out of her apartment home for exercise. She was overweight with poor muscle development and fell into a deep depression over the loss of the only home she had known. When Allie arrived at the Sanctuary, she could barely stand or walk due to years of severe muscle atrophy. She would make frequent stops to recover from exhaustion.
But after slow but consistent physical rehabilitation, Allie was able to walk like a champ! Thanks to the work of the caring staff and volunteers, Allie quickly rebounded physically and emotionally. With a strong body and eager mind, her absolute favorite activities became trips to obedience class and a trip to the local state park for a dip in the river. Allie was adopted by a young couple that shares Allie’s quiet, soulful personality. She’s living in a home with a yard and gets to go on lots of trips to the park, and is still enjoying dog training classes.
