Q: Why does the Olive Oil & Vinegar dressing look cloudy or lumpy in the refrigerator?
When refrigerated, olive oil tends to solidify giving the cloudy appearance to our olive oil-based dressings. Once the product gets close to room temperature the product will return to its normal appearance. There is nothing wrong with the product and most olive oil dressings act this way.

Q: Why did Newman's Own change its salad dressing bottles from glass to plastic?
In April, 2005, we made a thoughtful choice to change our salad dressing bottles from glass to plastic. While contemplating the change, we talked to a lot of Newman's Own consumers, and what we found was an overwhelming preference for plastic bottles over glass.
Here's what we heard our consumers say they really liked about plastic bottles:
- Easier to use – our customers felt that plastic was a better option when it came to handling the bottle, because it was easier to lift and the dressing poured more easily
- Lightweight – this was an important concern when expressing a preference for plastic because of increased ease of use and the bottle being comfortable in the hand.
- Increased Safety – with no possibility of breakage, the issue of safety for both adult and young users was a top consideration in preference for plastic over glass, which eliminates the possibility of broken bottles.
Even with all the positive aspects of plastic bottle, we've gotten some questions from consumers about why we made this change and want to address areas of concern.
As opposed to some plastic bottles, such as PVC, which may have adverse effects on health and the environment, the PET-1 plastic that we use is fully recyclable and is widely considered the most environmentally friendly form of fossil-fuel derived plastic.
And, because of the type of high grade of plastic used, there is no possibility of the plastic leaching into the product. In addition, the plastic bottle does not affect the full, all-natural flavor of our dressings.
Lastly, given the 100% recyclability rate of PET-1 and the attendant reduction in solid waste, we felt the move was environmentally friendly. 16,000,000 lbs less of solid waste flowing into the environment, and the attendant fuel savings when shipping the dressing, is a win win for the environment.
So what does this all mean for our valued customers? Same great tasting product, improved ease and safety of use, and a better rate of recyclability. We feel it's a switch for the better all around.
