Q. To which charities does Newman's Own give the profits?

Actually, Newman's Own, Inc. makes no gift to charity, but Paul Newman, who receives all the profits and royalties from Newman's Own, Inc., distributes all of that personally to the charities of his choice. Since the inception of the company, it is our understanding that the total amount of those gifts to charity has been approximately $200 million.

Q. What is the relationship between Paul Newman and the Hole in the Wall Camps?

Paul Newman and the Newman’s Own Foundation donate all profits received from the sale of Newman’s Own products to thousands of charities within the United States and abroad, with a special emphasis on the communities where the products are sold.

The first Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, founded by Paul Newman, was opened in 1988 in Ashford, CT.  It is a nonprofit residential summer camp where children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses come each summer for an unforgettable experience, free of charge.   There are now eight camps in operation, five in the United States, and one each in Ireland, the United Kingdom and France, with several more scheduled to open in the near future. The Hole in the Wall Camps is the world’s largest family of Camps for children with serious illnesses and life-threatening conditions.

The Camps are among the many charities Paul Newman supports, but the they can only be built and sustained by a very broad base of support.  The Association and each Hole in the Wall Camp is an independent 501(c)3 (or equivalent) charity responsible for raising the funds to support its own annual operating budgets and capital needs, and all are sustained entirely by charitable contributions from foundations, corporations, individuals, and organizations.  Raising funds for the Camps is especially meaningful, because none of the 13,000 children served each year pays for any services provided by the Camps.  For more information about the Camps, please visit www.holeinthewallgang.org.

Q.Why did Newman’s Own change our salad dressing bottles from glass to plastic?

In April, 2005, we made a thoughtful choice to change our salad dressing bottles from glass to plastic.    While contemplating the change, we talked to a lot of Newman’s Own consumers, and what we found was an overwhelming preference for plastic bottles over glass.

Here’s what we heard our consumers say they really liked about plastic bottles:

  • Easier to use – our customers felt that plastic was a better option when it came to handling the bottle, because it was easier to lift and the dressing poured more easily
  • Lightweight – this was an important concern when expressing a preference for plastic because of increased ease of use and the bottle being comfortable in the hand.
  • Increased Safety – with no possibility of breakage, the issue of safety for both adult and young users was a top consideration in preference for plastic over glass, which eliminates the possibility of broken bottles.

Even with all the positive aspects of plastic bottle, we’ve gotten some questions from consumers about why we made this change and want to address areas of concern.

As opposed to some plastic bottles, such as PVC, which may have adverse effects on health and the environment, the PET-1 plastic that we use is fully recyclable and is widely considered the most environmentally friendly form of fossil-fuel derived plastic.

And, because of the type of high grade of plastic used, there is no possibility of the plastic leaching into the product.  In addition, the plastic bottle does not affect the full, all-natural flavor of our dressings.

Lastly, given the 100%  recyclability rate of PET-1 and the attendant reduction in solid waste, we felt the move was environmentally friendly.  16,000,000 lbs less of solid waste flowing into the environment, and the attendant fuel savings when shipping the dressing, is a win win for the environment.

So what does this all mean for our valued customers?  Same great tasting product, improved ease and safety of use, and a better rate of recyclability.  We feel it’s a switch for the better all around.

Q. Does Newman's Own sell salad dressing in single serving size pouches in grocery stores?

Although we sell our single serve pouches to university dining halls, military commissaries and at McDonald's, we do not sell them in the grocery store. All of our great salad dressing flavors are available in bottles.

Q. Tell me more about the Newman's Own partnership with McDonald's.

As of March 2003, McDonald's has been featuring Newman's Own all-natural salad dressings served with McDonald's new Premium Salads in restaurants nationwide - Creamy Caesar, California Cobb, Ranch, Lighten Up Low Fat Balsamic Vinaigrette, and French (available in select markets). As the exclusive provider of salad dressings to McDonald's, this alliance allows Newman's Own to reach a much broader audience, attract new consumers and increase Paul Newman's donations to charity.

Newman's Own Salad Dressings offered at McDonald's restaurants, as accompaniment to their salads, are restaurant formulations that are refrigerated to preserve their freshness. McDonald's is the only national Quick Serve Restaurant that offers an all-natural salad dressing.

These products are only available at McDonald's and are not offered for sale in retail outlets, though several similar flavors can be found at grocery stores including Ranch, Lighten Up Balsamic Vinaigrette and Creamy Caesar.

Q. Can I find the McDonald's salad dressings at the grocery store?

We're pleased to know that you've been enjoying our salad dressings at McDonald's. The five dressings we sell at McDonald's, Creamy Caesar, California Cobb, Ranch, Lighten Up Low Fat Balsamic Vinaigrette, and French (available in select markets), have been specially formulated for our partnership with McDonald's and these versions may only be purchased at a McDonald's restaurant.

Bottled versions of Ranch, Lighten Up Balsamic Vinaigrette and Creamy Caesar are available at grocery stores. These products differ slightly from those in McDonald's because they are shelf stable, whereas the dressings in McDonald's are refrigerated.
